Introduction

We are pleased to introduce to you the new event Smart Grids Europe, which will be organized in conjunction with Transmission & Distribution Europe 2009.

Today’s grid faces great challenges as a result of the changes required to meet both European policy goals and climate change reduction. It is evident that in order to meet the European targets of 2020 and beyond calling for efficient sustainable use of energy resources a well thought strategy should be deployed for the smart use of new technologies. This strategy will aim at creating the reliable self healing grids of the future that will allow unlimited penetration of renewable sources of energy and maximise the efficiency of energy use through a well thought and easy to use demand side management facility.

Europe’s electric grid is huge serving 430 million people, in order to secure their future energy supply large investments are necessary. The International Energy Agency has estimated that approximately € 500 billion will be invested in European grids by 2030. The deployment of smart grids will play an important role in this.

Smart Grids Europe 2009 will provide a platform to define and the discuss the role of the smart grid in Europe. Industry experts will discuss the growing smart grids market and how to plan & implement smart grid technologies in the current business. It will look at sustainability issues, explore business models, and demonstrate how building the next generation grid can improve overall operational efficiencies.
